Community lunches and consultation days.
Most Wednesdays we throw open our doors and invite our community to join us for lunch and a yarn. Please call beforehand if you’re coming so we have enough food for all!
Our Community Consultation Days are a more formalised opportunity for us to open our doors and listen. We invite families, Elders and community members to share their thoughts on how we’re doing and how we can grow.
Parent & Community Advisory.
Interested families and community members are also invited to join our Parent & Community Advisory, led by our Family Connections Worker. This group is a vital link to our community, meeting monthly to provide feedback and ideas that help keep Jabiru thriving.

Community celebration days.
Each term, we invite our families and local community to step inside our space and celebrate the incredible achievements of your young people. It’s a chance to see what they’ve been creating, and to connect with the learning and support teams in a relaxed, informal setting.

Exhibitions.
Families and other loved ones are a vital part of our Big Picture Learning Design, which is why our young people host exhibitions and showcase their work to the important people in their lives. When you sit in on an exhibition, you aren’t just a spectator - you’re a witness to a young person’s growth, resilience and talent.
What to expect at an exhibition:
- Leadership: The young person will run the show. They’ll use their portfolio to walk you through what they’ve achieved, where they’ve struggled and what they’ve mastered.
- Support: There are no scary judging desks or intimidating panels. It’s a conversation between the young person, their learning team and their loved ones.
- No Surprises: This isn't a report card reveal. It’s a chance for the young person to say, "This is who I am becoming and this is the work I'm proud of".
Mentors & Workplace Partners
Workplace learning is a key part of our Big Picture Learning Design. Through shadow days, workplace visits and internships with local businesses, our young people build skills in real-world settings, while making connections with community and business leaders.

Independent Learning Plan (ILP) meetings.
At the start of each term, we invite families and important people for an Independent Learning Plan (ILP) meeting. This is the moment where the young person, their family and loved ones, and the learning advisory team co-design a customised education plan for the upcoming term. There are no pre-set boxes you have to fit into – we work together to build the box around you.
Think of the ILP as your personalised learning blueprint. We look at:
- Your passions: What actually interests you? Maybe gaming, mechanics, social justice, design?
- Your goals: What do you want to achieve this term?
- Your career: What kind of internships or real-world experiences do you want to explore?
- Your needs: What support do you need to feel good and stay on track?
Families and support people are a fundamental part of this process. You know the young person better than anyone. Your insights help us understand what motivates them, what keeps them up at night and what their true strengths are.
When families and loved ones attend ILP meets:
- Everyone is on the same page. We all hear the goals at the same time.
- Support is doubled. The student feels backed by a team, rather than just a school.
- Real-world connections happen. Often, a family member or friend has a connection to an industry the student is interested in.
