Who can enrol at JCC?
With this aim in mind, the College is for young people who are:
- seeking a flexible, holistic and supported approach to learning in grades 10, 11 or 12 of their senior years.
- not currently enrolled in other full-time training, education or employment programs.
- facing challenges that make enrolling in, or staying engaged in, other education/training options difficult.
The college’s Enrolment Eligibility Policy describes these eligibility criteria in more detail. If you would like to know if you, or a young person you are supporting, is eligible for enrolment at the college, please give us a call on 07 3554 1799 to discuss this with our staff. We will be happy to provide a copy of our enrolment policy on request.
How is learning organised at JCC?
At JCC we recognise that your wellbeing and your capacity to learn go hand in hand. All students at JCC are connected with two key members of staff – a Learning Advisor and Community Group Coordinator. The Community Group Coordinator is there to support you to build a strong connection to the school community and to overcome the challenges that have made it difficult for you to engage with other schools. The Learning Advisor will help you develop and work on your learning plan. Together, the 3 of you will work as team to help you build and maintain your wellbeing and to progress your learning.
The learning model we use at JCC is very different. We think it can work well for all learners, but especially those at JCC who are dealing with challenges related to injustice and oppression. The model of learning we use at JCC is the Big Picture Education Australia design for learning. In this model:
- learners are members of an Advisory Group (we refer to them as Community Groups) of no more than 16;
- group Members are supported (& support each other) to develop their own individual learning plan and pursue projects based around their personal interests & passions;
- learning takes place both at the college and in the wider community through internships and other external learning options; and
- Learners exhibit their learning to a panel of their peers, teachers, mentors and parents/carers.
You can read more about how JCC implements the Big Picture Model of Learning here.
